Until December 2011 only vehicles that meet NZ emission rules are able to be complied to use on the road in NZ. Mostly that will mean vehicles newer than 2001, howerver there are some 1999 vehicles that will comply and some 2003's that will not! Most auction sheets show the emission code just prior to the chasis code.
Common codes that DO NOT comply are E and GF. Cars with these codes cannot be complied for road use and are only suitable for track or stripped for parts.

Codes that DO comply with the emission rules are GH GJ HN HP LA LB LN LP LQ LS LR TA TB TN TP TQ TR TS UA UN UP UQ US UR XA XB YA YB ZA GK GL HQ HR LC TD TC TD UC UD XC XD YC YD ZC ZD GM HS LE TE UE XE YE ZE and any three letter code.

Diesel Vehicles
Diesel vehicles must have a three letter emission code in order to comply in NZ for road use. This is mostly 2007 models and newer.
